Traverser Saxophone Quartet

The Traverser Saxophone Quartet was formed in September of 2002 when four saxophone teachers from colleges and universities in the Northern West Virginia/Southern Pennsylvania region collaborated. The idea behind the quartet was in the name Traverser, or "crossing over." This can be explained by the varied music that the group performs - everything from core classical repertoire to jazz and funk styles.  Also, the members switch instruments throughout the performances, creating a continuously varied ensemble texture.

Seeking out new music is one of the TSQ's main objectives.  Such great American composers as Walter S. Hartley (Suite No. 2 and Outdoor Music), David Williams (Quartet for Saxophones, Enon Valley), and Christopher Tilley (Sonatina) have already dedicated works to the TSQ, but the music does not end there!  The Greek composer Spiros Mazis  has written a wonderful work (Your Sad and Funny Face), and Turkish composer Server Acim (Turkey) is currently composing  for the TSQ.

The TSQ has already given concerts in Europe (Poland, the Czech Republic, Austria, and Hungary)     L -R:  Curtis Johnson, David Wright, Mike Sakash, Jon Brink
well as across the states of West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Minnesota, at events such as the World
Saxophone Congress XIII.  They hosted the first annual Traverser Saxophone Symposium at West Virginia Wesleyan College in February, 2003, and founded the Appalachian Saxophone Orchestra.  The second annual Traverser Saxophone Symposium was  held at West Virginia University on March 5, 2004, and the third at Washington and Jefferson College, March 19, 2005.  The quartet looks forward to the 4th annual Traverser Saxophone Symposium to return to West Virginia Wesleyan College in 2006!

Along with completing their first CD, the Quartet is now preparing for a return to Europe as participants in the 14th World Saxophone Congress to be held in Ljubljana, Slovenia, July 5-9, 2006.
