Universe in the Park

Universe in the Park

Universe in the Park (UitP) is a summer outreach program originally started by the Astronomy Department at the University of Wisconsin in 1996 followed by the Astronomy Department at the University of Minnesota starting in 2000. We are implementing this idea for West Virginia state parks during the summer of 2017.

UitP is predicated on the idea that the best environment in which to introduce the general public to astronomy is outside under dark skies. Under this program, college students travel to state parks on Friday and Saturday evenings during the summer months and present PowerPoint shows on astronomy or other science topics. Typically, two students give each show. Recent science news is often discussed, such as the discovery of new solar systems, and skymaps are handed out. On clear nights, after the presentation, telescopes are set up to view astronomical objects.  A planet walk will also be featured for these events.

The funding for this project is being provided by the NASA-WV Space Grant Consortium and by the WV Science Public Outreach Team (SPOT).

We currently have three presentations available:
Invisible Universe
The Star of Our Universe
Water: The Source of Life
