Wellness Center Provides Space for Self-Improvement

Opening in 2012, the Wellness Center at West Virginia Wesleyan has played a pivotal role in the overall well-being of the Wesleyan student body, faculty, and staff.

“We focus not only on the physical wellness of our patrons, but we also want to target the other five dimensions of wellness,” stated Katie Squires ’09, wellness coordinator. Squires was happy to inform the administration that this year has been the facility’s busiest since its opening. Averaging 200 daily visitors per week, the Wellness Center has proven to play a significant role in the daily lives of the Wesleyan community.

A primary key to the Wellness Center’s growing success is the facility’s diverse appeal to the entire Wesleyan community. The 9,000 square foot facility offers state-of-the-art equipment for every form of exercise including cardio, resistance training, and weight training. Along with the full arsenal of exercise equipment, the Wellness Center hosts a broad array of classes available to the student-body. Weekly classes offered by the Wellness Center include Zumba, Yoga, and aerobics courses.

“For Spring 2015, the Wellness Center is offering programs highly focused on bodily wellness and self-improvement,” stated Instructional Program Coordinator Lauren Anderson.

A popular event taking place this spring is the annual Biggest Loser competition.

“The Biggest Loser is a six-week competition in which each contestant is paired with a student exercise-science coach whom guides them along their journey,” explained Anderson.

Each contestant is weighed once a week to track their progress, and at the conclusion of the competition a large celebration is held. The celebration even includes a healthy full-course meal catered by the school.

The goal for the Wellness Center is to continue educating the Wesleyan community in wellness education while providing the necessary resources for students to accomplish their personal wellness-related goals.
